When the temps start dropping here in Lantana, TX, the last thing you want is a busted water heater. Cold showers, sky-high energy bills, or worse — water damage — are all things we’d rather skip this season. So let’s talk about a few common issues we see around here and how to get ahead of ‘em before they turn into big, messy (and expensive) problems.
Master Plumber Todd Jensen — yep, that’s our guy — has worked on hundreds of water heaters across North Texas, and he’s got some advice you’ll want to hear.
💥 Problem #1: High Water Pressure
A lotta folks think high water pressure is a good thing — more pressure, better showers, right? Not exactly. Too much pressure can wear out your water heater and pipes way faster than you’d expect. We’ve seen water heaters fail early just from this alone.
Todd’s Tip:Install a Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) to keep things in check. It’s a small fix that saves you big bucks down the line.
🌡 Problem #2: Water Heater in the Attic
Look, we get it — putting your water heater in the attic saves space. But in Texas summers, your attic turns into an oven. That extra heat makes your water heater work overtime and shortens its life.
Better Option?Move it to the garage or utility room if you can. Cooler spot = longer-lasting heater.
⚙️ Problem #3: Inefficient Double Heaters
A lot of homes here were built with two water heaters running in parallel — only one kicks in at a time. Sounds fine, but it’s not very energy-efficient.
Todd’s Fix:
Go with a series system instead. Both heaters share the load when you need 'em. That means quicker hot water, less energy waste, and lower bills.
🔥 Upgrade Idea: Tankless Water Heater
If your old tank is on its last leg, this might be the perfect time to go tankless. They only heat water when you actually use it — so no more paying to keep 50 gallons hot all day. Plus, they’re small and sleek, and they free up space in your garage.
⏰ Don’t Forget the Expansion Tank
This one’s easy to miss. Your expansion tank helps manage pressure changes, but it doesn’t last forever. After about 7 years, it can start to rust and fail — and if it goes out, you might be looking at a leak or a flood.
Best move?
Replace it on schedule. It’s cheaper than cleaning up a soaked ceiling.
❄️ Get Winter-Ready — For Free
Cold snaps in Lantana can sneak up quick. If your pipes or heater are already stressed, that first freeze could push things over the edge.
